Coconut Lagoon, Kumarakom

BACK TO NATURE

The network of backwater canals that sprawl like a maze behind the sea in Kerala, are one of India’s most stunning sights. These are usually best seen from the comfort of a houseboat that glides slowly through the glistening water. This, or a comfortable hotel that is located right at the edge. CGH Earth’s Coconut Lagoon is addressed on the edge of one of India’s largest inland lakes, Vembanad Lake. A private jetty connects to the hotel, in a secret hideout manner, perfect for those who like a little isolation.

In true CGH style, the hotel is a glowing symbol of sustainability and up cycling. Each cottage of the hotel is a meticulously put together wok of art. These have been built from the remains of old mansions that included intricate detailing on doors, windows and other parts. These have been re-used at Coconut Lagoon. As one can imagine, bringing these pieces and getting skilled craftspeople to reassemble them was no mean feat. But the result is delightful, atmospheric, and more than anything else, exclusive. Here, you can get a sense of what it must be like to stay in an ancient Keralan house. As a mark of respect for the environment, the hotel also has a sacred grove in the property, which was a staple feature in old homes.

Birding with naturalists, rejuvenating Ayurvedic massages, a swimming pool and an excellent local cuisine are some of the other highlights.
